Mental Health Keynote for Students:
turning challenges into opportunities
Hank’s Story marks an incredible journey of recovery and overcoming challenges. After making a traumatic self-inflicted gunshot attempt on his life at 16 years old, Hank had to endure more than 100 facial reconstructive procedures and faced countless other challenges on his path to mental and physical healing. Now 10 years later, Hank’s journey has allowed him to gain valuable insights into the importance of mental wellness and how it can impact all aspects of life, especially our students and youth.
Self-inflicted harm is a serious and growing problem among young people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Self-Inflicted harm is the second leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 10 —24 years old. This alarming statistic highlights the need for increased awareness, understanding and support for mental health among our youth.
As a mental health advocate and speaker, Hank Beasley is committed to addressing the issue with self inflicted harm to help bring this statistic down. Hank shares his own personal story of overcoming mental health struggles and self-harm, in order to help others who may be going through something similar. He recognizes that talking openly and honestly about mental health can help reduce the stigma surrounding these topics, and encourages our young individuals to seek help and speak out.
Hank emphasizes the importance of early intervention and support for young people who may be struggling to understand their own mental health. He encourages parents, educators, and community members to be vigilant and proactive in identifying warning signs of self-harm and provides guidance on finding resources and support for those who may be at risk.
Hank's own story of overcoming mental health struggles and self-harm serves as an inspiration and a testament to the power of resilience and perseverance. By sharing his story and advocating for increased awareness and support, Hank is helping to make a positive impact in the lives of young people across the world.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
DIFFERENCES ARE YOUR SUPERPOWER
Hank gives your students the confidence to Turn differences into their superpower, instead of what we normally see, students feeling down because they aren’t the same as their peers. Hank inspires students to find their spark of energy by teaching them how to step into their own shoes with confidence instead of feeling like they need to be in someone else’s.
Hank will ask students the tough questions like.. What are your differences? How do you identify your differences? How do you reframe yourself from feeling weird to seeing an opportunity to be unique? Hank encourages students to thrive in their uniqueness, not digress because of their differences.
MISTAKES DON’T DEFINE YOU
Hank nails down the message to students that mistakes don't define you. Students will discover that their response to any challenge, mess-up, or mistake is what defines them, not the incident itself. Hank’s Story of growing up feeling different, to where he is at today, will give students a new and refreshing perspective on life that will inspire them to keep going— even when life gets tough. Students will gain the necessary tools, confidence & motivation to keep pursuing their dreams, even when things get tough.
Hank helps students feel comfortable overcoming challenges and doing it “one bite at a time” — one step at a time. This all it takes to get going in the right direction. Hank helps students realize how life is worth living no matter what they go through.
CONFIDENCE THROUGH COMMUNICATION
Communication is key to saving lives and identifying when someone is struggling with mental health issues, yet so many young individuals keep their feelings and emotions bottled up inside. Hank’s message will help students understand why communication is so important to encouraging peers to seek help when needed. So many young individuals want to speak up about how they are feeling but are held back from doing so due to the harsh stigmas around expressing ones feelings. It is up to our youth to reshape this environment to be more inclusive and to encourage others to speak up when they are feeling down.
Hanks emphasizes the urgent need for youth to find their voices, and become advocates for their mental health and that of their peers. Students will leave inspired and confident to start the conversation with anyone who needs it. Students will leave inspired to break the stigma surrounding mental health, and create supportive environments where all of their peers feel comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking help when needed.
